“How beautiful the things are that you did not notice before”
Robert Bly
This series started in the lock down for Covid 19. The subjects are tools used in my studio. There is a strong formal aspect to these paintings. The paintings locate these identifiable objects in a still life context. The paintings are executed in oil on wood. They are modest in size and often play with scale as an expressive element. They are beautiful to behold. Locating a readable form in implied space on the flat plane fascinates me. The pictures start in the sketchbook and come from objects that I work with in the studio. Compositionally my concern is the relationships between the forms and spaces. When in process the concern is with colors, values, textures, and painterly appearance of the surface. These are quiet, contemplative paintings expressing the spirit of these objects. A direct description. Merging representational and painterly effects to open a void or silence for the viewer to enter and interpret.
